Is this just another app?
The Kysana app was built specifically for brain health. Unlike conventional keto apps, it supports a medically ketogenic diet with recipes in the right ratio of carbohydrates, fat and protein to reach ketosis and therapeutically relevant ketone levels.
You can also log your ketone levels, mood and nutrition, create individual meal plans and follow your progress together with your coach.
We continuously develop the app based on current research and in close exchange with nutrition counselors, clinics and psychotherapists. Our goal: to make a science-based approach understandable and easy to integrate into your everyday life.
Doesn't that sound like a promise of a cure?
The medically ketogenic diet is far more than a diet: it is a metabolic therapy. The body switches its energy production from glucose to ketone bodies, which serve as an alternative energy source for the brain.
In recent years, this form of therapy has increasingly been studied for mental illness as well. Numerous case reports, pilot studies and first randomized controlled trials show promising results, including in depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The scientific evidence is growing continuously and makes the medically ketogenic diet a promising building block of psychiatry.
What if my doctor is skeptical?
The medically ketogenic diet is still little known to many doctors. At the same time, the scientific evidence is growing, and more and more clinics are engaging with the approach. We provide information material for your doctor to download. If there are questions, your doctor can contact us directly at any time.
Can I manage this in everyday life?
The Kysana app helps you simplify your everyday life and use the ketogenic diet effectively. Studies show that even people with severe mental illness were able to implement this diet in everyday life. The easiest way to start is together with an experienced keto professional at your side.
How long does it take to notice an effect?
This varies from person to person and depends on the condition, metabolism and consistent implementation. Some people notice first changes within a few weeks; for others it takes several months. We recommend following the medically ketogenic diet consistently for at least three months before judging its effect.
Is the medically ketogenic diet right for me?
When implemented correctly, the medically ketogenic diet is safe for most people. At the beginning, temporary symptoms of the so-called keto flu can occur, e.g. fatigue, headaches, dizziness, concentration problems or muscle cramps. A keto coach can help prevent these early on.
Special caution is needed with blood pressure and diabetes medication, as blood pressure and blood sugar often improve quickly and the medication needs to be adjusted. Therefore, always discuss the dietary change with your treating doctor.
Who is the ketogenic therapy not suitable for?
The medically ketogenic diet is not suitable for everyone. It should not be used with certain rare metabolic disorders (e.g. disorders of fatty acid oxidation or carnitine metabolism), acute pancreatitis, severe liver insufficiency or certain forms of porphyria.
Special caution is also needed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and when taking SGLT2 inhibitors (a specific diabetes medication). With type 1 diabetes or other pre-existing conditions, the therapy should only be carried out under medical and nutritional-therapeutic supervision.
